Tibbets Family Antislavery History
Phil's great-great-grandfather, John Henry Tibbets, was a "conductor" for the Underground Railroad. His father, Samuel Tibbets, was an abolitionist, cofounder of the Eleutherian College, and president of Neil's Creek Anti-Slavery Society.
Ford Family and the Colorado Gold Country
Simeon Ford, Phil's grandfather, and his brother Edwin owned a store in the gold rush town of Victor, near Cripple Creek. Gold was found underneath the store but the Fords didn't have the mineral rights. Edwin was mayor of Victor 4-6-1897 to 4-11-1898. His election was contested. Jimmy Doyle, a well know character in those parts, was mayor before and after Edwin.
